There is no doubt about it, Muck Boots were designed for working/playing in the muck and mud.

However, in order for them to last, you need to take the time to properly care for them.

For that reason, in this post, we are going to talk about how to clean your muck boots and offer a few additional tips to ensure that they last you a long time.

In order to answer that, we have divided this post into 3 sections: exterior care, interior care, and odor control.

Exterior Care

What you will need:

A soft bristle brush or a small washcloth
Liquid Soap
Lots of water

The first thing you are going to want to do is to remove all the dirt and mud. Preferably this should be done while it is still fresh. However, it is okay if you waited until it is caked on, but keep in mind that it will require a little more elbow grease. To remove the dirt and mud use a soft brush or even a damp washcloth to brush it off. It is also at this point that you can use a garden hose to really get in there and get all those corners.
Next, you want to lather your boots up with a liquid soap. This can be done by either applying the soap to the rag or directly to the boot. Note: This is a great time to inspect your boots. As you are applying the soap, look for cracks or punctures.
Once lathered up, rinse them off with a good water source such as an outdoor garden hose.
Now it is time to dry them. This can be down two ways. You can allow them to air dry or you can hand dry them. However, a word of caution, DO NOT place them by a heat source in hopes of them drying faster. This can cause the material to shrink and it will damage them. Personally, I wouldn't even allow them to dry in the sunlight, to avoid having problems with them fading or shrinking.

What can I do about salt stains?

Salt stains can be difficult to get out no matter the type of boot that you have, the same can be said about Muck Boots. One solution I have found to be very effective in removing salt stains is white vinegar.

Start by mixing a little bit of white vinegar with water and gently scrub the solution into the salt stains with a washcloth. After the brief scrub down, rinse them off with water. If the stains don't come off after the first attempt try again.

A quick word of caution about using vinegar. This can be a powerful solution in removing tough stains, but it also can do damage to your boots.

For best results, don't use too much vinegar and always test a small area before applying to the entire boot.

Can I use a waterproofing spray on my muck boots?

Yes, you can. While muck boots are 100% waterproof many people like to apply a waterproofing spray for additional protection. This can be done by applying the spray after the boots have been cleaned and allow to dry completely.

Can I apply a rubber conditioner to my boot?

Yes, you can. Rubber conditioner while not necessary is another great way to enhance an already great boot. Keep in mind when applying this conditioner to not apply it to the sole of the boot.

This solution works great in preventing your boot from fading, but it can make a slip resistant sole very slippery.

Interior Care

Now that we talked about how to clean the exterior of your boot, let's talk briefly about cleaning the inside.

What you will need:

White vinegar or a liquid Soap
Water
Wash Cloth
Small Towel

Begin by mixing a 1 part water with 1 part vinegar.
Next, take the washcloth and start to wash the inside of your boot. Make sure to get those tough to reach places like down by the toe.
Lastly, place a towel in the toe of the boot to help keep it shape, turn them upside down and allow them to dry overnight. Once again, DO NOT place them by a heat source. This can cause the boots to shrink or to crack.

Odor Control

Now that our boots are clean and smell fresh we want to keep them that way. For that reason, in this next section, let's talk about 2 easy tips for keeping the odor at bay.

Newspaper. One of the best ways to keep the odors down is to keep your boots dry. Now Muck Boots use some of the best technology to keep your boots/feet dry.

However, after a long day of work your feet can get wet. When this happens it is important to allow them to dry properly.

One of the best ways to do that is to put newspaper in them overnight. The newspaper will absorb any moisture and hopefully prevent any odor bacteria from growing.

I know it might be tempting to use a boot dryer to quickly dry your boots but DON'T. As I mentioned earlier, using a heat source to dry your boots can do more damage than good.

Baking Soda. Another great solution, especially for those smelly boots, is baking soda.

Once you get home from work, remove your boots and dump in a little baking soda into each boot. Make sure there is just enough to cover the entire footbed. Once each boot has a light dusting of baking soda allow them to sit overnight. In the morning before putting on your boots dump out the solution.
